Permanent Residency Obligation

Permanent Residency Obligation

Permanent residents must comply with residency obligation, which normally requires them to physically reside in Canada for 730 days every five years. The days they are accompanying a spouse or common-law partner who is a Canadian citizen outside Canada count toward their residency obligation. If they are assigned by a Canadian organization to work overseas on a full-time basis, the days count toward their residency obligation, too. However, the business cannot be one that its establishment is primarily for the purpose of a permanent resident to meet their residency obligation.
